Festival Opera presents this beloved but tragic opera, reimagined and directed by industry heavyweight Jennifer Ward-Lealand, with production design by John Verryt, previous designer for the acclaimed World of Wearable Art (WOW). Madame Butterfly tells the story of a discarded wife, left in a war-torn city after a brief marriage to Pinkerton, an officer in the armed forces, stationed there during the conflict. She waits in vain for his return, clinging on to the image she had created for herself as his wife, only to be disappointed and betrayed, and faced with a heartbreaking decision. Featuring a stellar cast, including Pene Pati (of Sol3 Mio fame), Toni Marie Palmertree (United States), Rebecca Afonwy-Jones (Wales) and Gary Griffiths (Wales) who returns for his third season with Festival Opera.  Premieres on Tuesday13th with successive performances on 15th, 17th and 19th of February.

Tremains Art Deco Festival

Tremains Art Deco Festival - 14-18 February 2018

Fox furs, boaters and beads are the order of the day as the Festival is a dress up party like no other. You’ll feel as if you’ve gone back in time as the streets are reclaimed by vintage vehicles and old jazz tunes blast from the street corners. Outside of the festival, Hawke’s Bay still retains a strong Art Deco vibe thanks largely to the architecture of the area which came about following a devastating earthquake in 1931 which destroyed much of central Napier. Take a tour in a vintage car or hire a guide to show you the best examples of Art Deco buildings you’ll see anywhere.
