Christine & John met in Edinburgh in the 1970’s, Christine a New Zealander, John a Scot.
John was born in Calcutta to Scottish parents and attended school in Edinburgh. He entered hotel management with Trust House Forte and that is how they met. Christine was a trained teacher but decided to work in hospitality on her OE and met John, an assistant manager at the Post House Hotel in Edinburgh, where they both worked for many years.
In 1980 they married in New Zealand , then returned to Scotland to live. They owned and ran a small country house hotel in Rhu on the west coast of Scotland for 8 years and had 4 children whilst there.
In 1988 the family returned to NZ to live and bring up their young family. John went back to working for large hotel companies throughout NZ and eventually settled in Auckland , so the children could attend high school & University. John worked for Langham hotels, after being MD for Langham Auckland, went to Hong Kong for 3 years to the head office & opened several hotels in China.
In 2012 John & Christine decided to buy Greenhill Lodge, Hastings, and return to owning their own business and living a rural lifestyle. They love meeting guests for all over the world and offering them a unique Kiwi experience in their home with added touches of luxury and comfort. The history of Greenhill is fascinating, built in 1898 by Archibald McLean, and is a fine example of Victorian architecture . It’s turret, verandas, high stud, beautiful hand painted glass leadlights, magnificent fireplaces, native timbers and large billiard room have all been restored to there original glory. As have the magnificent gardens designed by Alfred Buxton , a leading landscape gardener of the 1920’s. Greenhill is nestled at the top of a rise overlooking the 10 acres of gardens and all of Hawkes Bay. With the climate being seasonal but not extreme, Greenhill is an ideal location for John & Christine who love open fires in the winter but also enjoy the summer joys of the “fruit bowl of NZ” in the summer. They are “living the Dream”!
